The Romans Experience Day

Today, you’re stepping into the world of Ancient Rome.

As the day begins, you’ll meet Lucius, a soldier in the Roman army. He’s part of a recruitment team, searching for new soldiers to join his legion — and it’s his job to make sure Rome’s fearsome reputation is upheld.

Through a time-travelling journey, you’ll place the Romans in context, understanding where they sit on the timeline and how their empire grew. You’ll explore big questions: Why did the Romans invade and conquer? How did they plan campaigns? And what did it mean to live under Roman rule?

Not everyone welcomed the Romans.

As the story unfolds, you’ll meet figures such as Boudicca, bringing her rebellion to life through role-play and discussion. Can one individual really change the course of history? Pupils explore resistance, power, and consequence — seeing events from more than one point of view.

Once you’ve learned the basics, it’s time to train like a legionary. You’ll be put through your paces, learning your sinistra from your dextra, assembling into formation, and discovering why discipline and teamwork were at the heart of Roman military success.

If you prove yourselves worthy, you may be granted leave. You’ll experience how Roman soldiers relaxed, taking part in real Roman games and activities. A visit to the amphitheatre brings the day to a dramatic close, as pupils explore the world of the gladiator, meeting different fighter types and taking part in the spectacle — safely and age-appropriately, of course.

By the end of the day, you’ll have experienced life as a Roman soldier, explored empire and rebellion, and handled the equipment that helped Rome rule much of the known world.

Bringing key figures such as Boudicca and Claudius to life through guided storytelling.

  • Roman military training
Drill, movement, and formation work to understand how the Roman army functioned.

  • Roman games and leisure
Exploring how soldiers and civilians spent their free time.

Seeing and handling replica Roman equipment, learning how and why it was used.

  • Language and command
Learning simple Latin terms and commands used by Roman soldiers.

How many children can take part?

Our Romans Experience Day is suitable for mainstream KS2 classes, from single-form entry to four-form entry (approximately 30–120 pupils).

We can accommodate a wide range of group sizes, provided there is:

  • a clear hall with sufficient space for movement-based activities

  • appropriate staffing to remain with pupils throughout the day

Special Educational Needs (SEN / SEND)

Our experience days are designed to be inclusive, engaging, and flexible.

To ensure all pupils can take part safely, schools are asked to provide the appropriate staffing and any specialist support required for individual needs. As we bring physical props and equipment that are integral to the workshop, maintaining suitable supervision is essential.

If your pupils have additional needs or require adaptations, we are very happy to discuss this in advance and advise on how best to deliver an excellent experience.

What do we need to run the day?

To deliver a high-quality, immersive Romans Experience Day, we require:

  • secure on-site parking

  • exclusive use of a school hall for the duration of the day

  • two trestle tables

  • sufficient staff to remain with pupils throughout the workshop

(These requirements allow us to deliver a safe, structured, full-day experience.)

Why choose Classroom Adventures?
  • Designed for learning, not just entertainment
Every experience day is carefully structured to support KS2 history objectives, encouraging enquiry, discussion, and critical thinking alongside enjoyment.

  • Immersive, full-day experiences
We don’t deliver short workshops or assemblies. Each visit is a complete day of learning, allowing pupils time to explore ideas in depth and fully engage with the period.

  • Led by costumed historical interpreters
Pupils learn from knowledgeable facilitators who bring history to life through storytelling, discussion, and hands-on activities — not scripts or performances.

  • Hands-on, object-based learning
Pupils see and handle replica artefacts, tools, weapons, and equipment, helping them make tangible connections with the past.

  • Inclusive and adaptable
Our days are designed to be accessible, with flexibility built in to support a wide range of pupils and school settings.

  • Clear structure and professional delivery
We work alongside school staff, maintaining high standards of behaviour, safety, and safeguarding throughout the day.
