Choosing your own Roman Name!

So you are all dressed up and ready for your Roman day, but what should we call you?

Most names that we use today were not around in Ancient Rome. If you were a Roman you would have much less choice of names than we have today. In fact Romans only had around 35 names that they would use.

Girls names were usually just feminised versions of the boys names. For instance a boy could be called Claudius and a girl could be called Claudia.

Why not pick yourself a Roman name from our lists below?

If you don't like any of the names we have provided you could try making your own name sound Roman. Whilst this won't give you an accurate Roman name, it is still great fun. To do this add the suffix -us or -ius to your name if you are a boy and add the suffix -a or -ia to your name if you are a girl. You may wish to remove the last one or two letters of your real name first to make your Roman name sound better. Just play around with it until you find something that you like.

For example:

  • If you are a boy named David you could become Davius.

  • If you are a girl called Sally you may decide to become Sallia.
