Events, shows and performances

Our names are Lois and Stephen. We run Classroom Adventures and have been supporting heritage sites through events and displays for over fifteen years. With a combined experience of eight years running experience days for schools our event offer has fun and interactivity at its core.

Whichever period of history you would like us to represent, we bring a huge variety of games relevant to that period so that whenever we are not performing any shows the visitors to your event have plenty to occupy themselves with as a family group throughout the day.

We also provide shows throughout the day based on historical inventions and innovations as well as the day to day life aspects of social history.

Our offer listed below is based on what we most often are requested for. We cover over 7 periods of British history in schools so are able to be accommodating to your needs if you have a specific angle, or time period, that you would like covering.

We are able to operate as a stand alone or as part of a much larger event depending on the needs of your site and event.

We look forward to supporting your site and / or event.

Roman

Join Lucius and Flavia as they take your audience through a journey of discovery of Roman life. Lucius is a trader and, although his parents are native Britons, he very much considers himself a Roman! A journey to Rome when he was a child had him meet Heron of Alexandria and has been obsessed with inventions and science ever since! Flavia, however, keeps the house and business in order, making sure that the festivals are observed, and the gods honoured properly. She is regularly vexed with Lucius tinkering with his machines rather than doing anything useful and occasionally gets her own back on him!

Shows

Heron's Fountain

Water can't go up hill, gravity makes water always settle to the lowest point. To make a fountain therefore you need a reservoir higher than you want the fountain to go. Heron of Alexandria however (possibly as a miracle work for Emperor Nero) discovered a very simple way to make water go higher than it started.

In this show discover how Heron's magical fountain worked, how basic science can make magic happen and seemingly defy logic!

The Agrimensor

The Romans built the infrastructure for an empire 2,000 years ago and did it so well that some of what they built is still used/working today.

In this show children learn how to reach the lofty heights of Agrimensor (a bit like a present day surveyor), how Roman measurements worked and how to use Roman equipment such as the Groma and Hodometer.

Customs and Practices

Ritual and observances were very important to the Romans. It was important to keep the gods happy because... well it just doesn't bare thinking about!

The religion of the home is very different to the religion of the state and in this show children will see what it takes to be a Roman.

Communicating

Most of us have wrecked our voice through shouting when someone was struggling to hear us, either because they were too far away or because it was too noisy near us. The human voice therefore is not a very effective tool at communicating long distances.

The Romans were very innovative any came up with several solutions as the audience will be able to see and demonstrate.

Plus, also experience:

We provide a setting of tents with a display for us to perform our shows from as well as cover for the audience to sit under if needed.

We also bring with us lots of games from, or inspired by, the time of the Romans.

Families love playing the games and there is a wide selection for all abilities and ages to get involved with. The games are self managed by the public and are there to entertain for the full duration of the day.

Medieval

Join Walter and Eleanor as you step into the Middle Ages. Walter is an Inn Keeper at the Tabard Inn, although his wife Eleanor feels he pays far too much interest in his guests rather than keeping the business going. The problem is that the guests who pass through his inn are just too interesting and have so many fabulous stories of their travels and the sights that they have seen. If you ask him he will be more than happy to bend your ear over an ale about adventure, distant lands and clever inventions. Eleanor however, is all in the know about customs and herblore, things that are very useful when you don’t know who will be coming through that door in search of board and lodgings!

Shows

Castle Attack

In this show the children get to discover what makes a castle a castle and how it works whilst building one.

Then they get to destroy it with catapults.

It's as simple and as fun as that!

Spinning and Weaving

The wealth of this country was built on the wool trade and the Lord Speaker in the House of Lords sits upon a wool sack to acknowledge this.

In this show see the evolution of the spinning of wool from stone-age technologies through to the break throughs of the middle ages. The audience will also learn about how much our language reflects the wool trade.

Medieval Cures and Remedies

Come and get your ailments treated. But be warned, some of these cures are not for the faint hearted!

Discover some of the genius, and utterly bonkers, cures of the Middle-Ages

Dance Class

In this workshop the audience become participants and learn how to dance real Medieval dances.
